Use the following night safety ideas and tips to protect yourself when you go out at night…

Know Emergency Phone Numbers

Have a paper with names & phone numbers written down in addition to your phone.
This is a good back-up in case you lose your phone or you or someone else needs to access it and can’t.

Be Prepared

Always let someone know where you’re going, your expected travel time, and how long you’ll be out.
Try to wear reflective or bright clothing to not only make yourself more visible to drivers but to also help someone spot you faster in case of an assault.

Move along with confidence!  Assailants target those that appear weak.

Plan your travel route ahead of time before you leave.
Know exactly where you are going to reduce your travel time.
Invest in pepper spray and carry it with you at all times.
Add a small flashlight to your key chain to use in case of an emergency.
Have your keys ready in your hand to allow quick entry into your home or car.

Walking

Always have someone or a group of people that you trust to travel with at night.
There truly is safety in numbers, especially at night.
Always walk in well-lit, highly visible areas – even if it take a little longer.
Stay in familiar areas and avoid shortcuts when possible.

Cars

Never leave valuable items in your car in open view.
Park in well-lit areas – this is an important step to remember during the day.
Always try to see if the area will be safe for you to return to at night.
Always make note of where you park so that you can easily locate your car.

If you are approached by someone in a car, try to remember details of the car:
It’s color, type and license plate and any damage, if possible.
Take a photo – if it’s safe to do so.

Cell Phones

Having a cell phone with you at all times is a good night safety measure.
Always be sure that your phone is well-charged.

Always be aware of your surroundings.
One big distraction to avoid is using your cell phone.
Using electronics lowers your awareness and makes you more vulnerable.
Using electronics also attracts thieves due to their popularity and valuable nature.
Try to keep electronics out of plain site.
Use Bluetooth devices and headphones to keep your hands as free as possible.

Remember, it’s your personal responsibility to do everything in your power to keep yourself safe.
By being prepared and aware of your personal safety, you can reduce your risk when you are out at night.
